Can I Use Images from Google on My Blog?
If you’ve ever copied an image straight from a Google search and dropped it into a blog post, you’re definitely not the only one. But here’s the question every content creator eventually faces: can you legally use photos from Google on your blog?
The short answer? No, not without proper rights or permission.
As a lawyer who blogs (and a blogger who’s answered more copyright questions than I can count), I get how confusing this can be. Google makes it effortless to find the perfect photo, but that convenience comes with legal strings attached.
In this post, I’ll cover what Google’s image results actually represent, how copyright law applies, and where to find photos you can safely use.

Google Images Isn’t a Free-for-All
Google Images is often mistaken for a giant photo archive. But what it actually does is index images from across the internet from news outlets, personal blogs, shops, stock image sites, you name it.
That means most of the images you see are copyrighted, even if they show up in your search results. Just because a picture is easy to find doesn’t mean it’s free to use.
Unless an image you find on Google is explicitly licensed for reuse, you don’t have the legal right to include it in a blog post. So, generally speaking, no, you can’t freely use Google images on your website.
Is Giving Credit Enough to Use Google Images on My Website?
Not quite. A common myth is that as long as you credit the source — maybe with a caption like “Photo via Google” — you’re in the clear.
Unfortunately, copyright law doesn’t work that way. Attribution is nice (and often required when permission is granted), but it doesn’t replace permission itself.
To legally use an image, it usually must meet one of the following conditions:
- It’s licensed under Creative Commons with terms that allow your intended use
- It’s in the public domain
- You created it yourself
- You purchased a license
If none of those apply, you’re better off finding an alternative.
What Images Can You Use on Your Blog?
If you’re asking what images are actually safe for blog use, here are your best options:

- Creative Commons–licensed images
Platforms like Flickr and Wikimedia Commons offer images with reuse-friendly licenses. Always double-check the terms. Some restrict commercial use or require attribution. - Public domain content
These are images that are no longer (or never were) protected by copyright. Sites like Public Domain Archive or many U.S. government sites have large collections. - Free stock photo libraries
Sites like Unsplash, Pexels, and Pixabay offer beautiful photos that are free to use, often even for commercial purposes. - Paid stock image services
If you want peace of mind and a wide selection, licensed content from Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, or DepositPhotos is a solid investment (the latter is the most affordable option and has a robust library). - Your own visuals
Whether it’s a smartphone snapshot or a Canva graphic, creating your own content is always the safest, and often the most on-brand, approach.
What If the Image Didn’t Come From Google?
Maybe you found an image on someone else’s blog or online store and figured that using it directly, rather than grabbing it through Google, might be okay.
Unfortunately, the source doesn’t change the rules. Whether you found a picture through search or landed on it directly, you still need the appropriate rights or license to use it.
So if you’re wondering whether you can use images from other websites on your blog, the answer is the same: not without permission.
What Happens If You Use Google Images On A Blog Without Permission?
Plenty of bloggers assume that small sites fly under the radar, so using google images on a website is okay. And ok, sometimes they do, but that doesn’t make it legal. And copyright holders, or their automated tracking tools, are everywhere.
If you use a copyrighted image without permission, you could:
- Get a DMCA takedown notice requiring your host or platform to remove your content (which can also get you in trouble with your platform or host)
- Receive a cease and desist letter
- Be asked to pay a retroactive licensing fee
- Face a copyright infringement lawsuit
And yes, this applies even if your blog is personal or non-commercial.
So, Can You Use Images from Google on Your Blog?
Only if the image is licensed for reuse or you’ve received direct permission. Otherwise, no. Google is a search engine, not a source of free blog visuals.
If you want to stay legally safe, and avoid potential headaches down the road, stick to image sources that are explicitly allowed, or make your own.
Blogging is creative work. Don’t let someone else’s creativity put yours at risk.
